In 1870, in the nineteenth century, Yataro Iwasaki explored the trade route between China and Russia with its three ships. Mitsuwaka (three rivers in Japanese) grew and the three vessels became diamonds, symbols of the brand. In 1873, the company was renamed Mitsubishi Shokai. The fourth president of the company, Koyata Iwasaki, grandson of Yataro, began to invest in motor vehicles, being born to Mitsubishi Motors, in 1917.
